Lower Trip To Switzerland Cost: Budget Switzerland Tips

I’m going to start this post off with the budget tip that can save you the MOST when planning out the cost to travel to Switzerland. But it does come with one caveat– if you have your heart set on Lucerne, Zurich or Interlaken, those cities are going to REALLY increase your family’s cost to travel to Switzerland!

Don’t worry, though! I’ve got some GREAT alternative spots you can visit instead. There are so many amazing things to see in Switzerland on a budget! You’ll be shocked at how much you love some of these lesser-known (and more budget friendly) towns.

Zurich’s Cheap Switzerland Alternative: Winterthur

Zurich is well known for having a vibrant culture, with plenty of shopping, incredible lakeside views, and a great nightlife.

On the other hand, Winterthur is just a 30 minute drive from Zurich. You’ll still find all the best things to see in Switzerland, including a charming old town, museums, and beautiful parks. Even better, you can easily plan your trip to Switzerland cost effectively by flying into Zurich, staying in the more-affordable Winterthur, and taking day trips. It’s a great home base for exploring the region without the high Zurich prices. 

Lucerne Switzerland On a Budget: Brunnen

Travelers love visiting Lucerne’s beautiful old town and its famous Chapel Bridge. It’s also close to Mount Pilatus and Lake Lucerne, making it a great vacation destination for families who love the outdoors.

But Lake Lucerne has their own budget Switzerland alternative: Brunnen. You can get comparable lake and mountain views while sharing the town with fewer tourists! It’s a peaceful, scenic spot for those who want to enjoy the beauty of central Switzerland on a budget. 

Interlaken Switzerland Budget Alternative: Thun

Perhaps the most famous lake in Switzerland, Interlaken is known for having plenty of adventure sports and easy access to the Jungfrau region.

To get the same experience as Interlaken without the higher price tag, visit Thun instead. You’ll get gorgeous lake views and an impressively lovely historic old town, while keeping the cost to travel to Switzerland more reasonable. Thun also has easy access to the Alps mountain range, and less tourists to share them with!

Geneva Switzerland cheaper alternative: Lausanne

Geneva kind of precedes itself… I mean, most adults learned of the Geneva Convention at some point in their school years. But in addition to being known for their international organizations, Geneva is also on Lake Geneva. With luxury shopping and endless activity choices, traveling to Geneva comes with the highest Switzerland travel cost!

If you’re looking for a similar vibe, consider Lausanne instead. Although Lausanne is rising in popularity, it’s still fairly affordable, with a lower overall trip to Switzerland cost. Also located on Lake Geneva, you can find comparable lakeside views, activities and cultural experiences in Lausanne. (While still keeping your trip to Switzerland on a budget.)

St. Moritz’s Budget Switzerland Alternative: Crans Montana

Luxury skiing, a cosmopolitan vibe, and of course, the winter sports. St. Moritz is THE MOST classy, fancy, absolutely gorgeous Switzerland destination. The ski resort town is definitely worth the hype, but it’s NOT really possible to visit St Moritz Switzerland on a budget!

If you’re looking for a beautiful ski-resort town, but willing to skip out on the glitz, glamor, and high price tags, visit Crans-Montana instead! Also a ski resort town, Crans-Montana is MUCH LESS famous! This means it also comes with a much more reasonable trip to Switzerland cost!

Montreux Switzerland Cheaper Alternative: Vevey

Last on this list is Montreux. If you’re a wine lover, a big fan of Jazz, or just want to experience the fun of Lake Geneva, Montreux is a popular choice. 

The town of Vevey, on the other hand, is just a short distance from Montreux. You’ll not only get similar views of Lake Geneva and the surrounding vineyards, but you’ll also find a more relaxed atmosphere and lower accommodation costs.

Okay, ready for the next Switzerland tips for the best, most budget-friendly trip ever?

Hear me out on this one. (And no, I’m not intentionally trying to be controversial.)

I know that a lot of the fun of going on vacation is not having to cook. Or clean. Or food prep.

I get it. I’ve got 5 cute little rugrats to look after, and even an all-inclusive vacation can involve more cleaning up than I’d prefer!

But when it comes to being able to visit Switzerland on a budget, those restaurant bills can make a BIG difference. 

Quick tips to reduce restaurant costs while traveling with kids:

These are some tips we use when traveling, to help keep our vacation costs low WITHOUT making a lot of work for myself.

1- Grab yogurt, muffins, and fruit for breakfast. They are single serving items that can easily be grabbed by little ones without a parent’s help.

2- Make sandwiches (or buy pre-made ones, if the price is right) ahead of time and bring them out with you for picnic lunches. It’s still fairly easy, and you can even get the kids involved! Our teenagers take turns making the sandwiches in the morning before we head out. (Plus, it’s good for them to have a mini-chore to break up the rampant scrolling they do any time they’re sitting at the hotel or airbnb.)

3- Stock up on fruit snacks, single-serving chip bags, trail mix, and other easy snack ideas to keep kids from wanting a snack in the middle of your Switzerland family vacation activities. 

4- Instead of eating out for dinner, opt for a large lunch in the late afternoons. Prices can often be less than a dinner menu at most restaurants, and the portion sizes are comparable. To make this work, we typically eat breakfast at the hotel/airbnb, bring a mid-morning snack with us, and then have another snack or sandwich when we get back to our accommodations in the evening if we get hungry again.

Don’t be afraid to visit grocery stores to stock up on breakfast and snack foods throughout your trip. It can REALLY make a big difference when trying to keep your trip to Switzerland cost as low as possible.

I actually go into depth about this in my main Switzerland tips post, so I won’t drag it on super long here. Especially since that post talks about this for a totally different reason. But since it is a HUGE part of keeping your vacation to Switzerland on a budget, I thought it was worth a mention here as well.

To keep your Switzerland travel cost as low as possible, you’re going to want to get the CHEAPEST available tickets for activities. 

I am normally a HUGE fan of sites like GetYourGuide for finding great things to do (especially for the flexibility and cancellation features). But when traveling to Switzerland, you need to keep things as cheap as possible.

Sometimes you can get tickets a little bit cheaper by going directly to the activity’s official website. This isn’t always the case, but it’s definitely worth checking the prices to make sure you’re getting the most out of your budget for Switzerland activities. (Just beware of changes/cancellations information.)

And that flows directly into my next set of Budget Switzerland tips…

When trying to decide on what to do in Switzerland, there’s a LOT of ideas you can look at which are going to be very cheap or affordable. There’s also LOTS of things to see in Switzerland that are totally FREE!

Look into local festivals, fairs and markets in the town you’re visiting. There are lots of cultural and seasonal festivals and fairs that happen at different times throughout the year. Most kids love these types of activities, especially if you get a fun festival snack or eat dinner at the market! This also kills two birds with one budget stone– eating out while also incorporating an activity! 

There are also a lot of great walking tours that you can take for free. This can not only give you a fun idea of what to do in Switzerland on a budget, but most walking tours have educational or historical information which makes them both entertaining and fun! 

The Rick Steves website often has great walking tours of popular tourist cities that are free to download and use. And I know I literally just advised you against finding activities on GetYourGuide. But there’s often some REALLY affordable self-guided tours on there for less than $20 that can really make your whole trip more fun. Just go to the GetYourGuide website, type your city into the search bar, and see what they have for budget Switzerland tours and activities.

In addition, there are also city passes to help you take advantage of even more fun activities in Switzerland on a budget. Not every Swiss city has one, unfortunately. But there’s a Geneva City Pass, a Zurich Card, and even a Fribourg City Card, for example. (Again, just go to GYG and type in your city to see what’s available.)

Some of the city cards I mentioned in the previous Switzerland tips include free or reduced transportation. But SOME cities and towns offer free busses, metro passes, etc without even needing a city card.

For example, when we visited Crans-Montana, they had a fantastic free bus system that went around the entire resort town! It really helped us keep our cost to travel to Switzerland lower, since we weren’t using so much of our own gas to get around. 

It can also be more fun for kids to ride public transportation! I have built a habit of telling my kids we’re going on ‘an adventure’ when we do things, so taking public transport can really help build that feeling of excitement. This is especially easy on a Switzerland family vacation, because the roads are so incredibly scenic!

I also want to mention, since we’re talking about the transportation portion of the trip to Switzerland cost, that there are also reduced fare passes you can buy. GetYourGuide has several, but there’s also sites like the Swiss-Pass.ch as well.

Anyhoo… let’s continue on with my list of travel tips for Switzerland on a budget.

I know, I know. Nobody likes to hear this tip, not even me! It’s hard to travel to places in the off-season, often because kids are in school. Things are busier in life, generally, during the school year. 

But I was actually inspired by a few other family travel groups who swear that it’s WAY better to just take their kids out of school in October. They are able to travel in the off periods, when things are a LOT cheaper. They also get less tourists that way. (This can make any trip feel so much more authentic and fun!)

And what really sealed the deal for me to want to test this out was that kids don’t really learn a lot of important information in October. They’re often settled into the new school year, without prepping for any major testing or big projects quite yet.

And many parents who talk to their kids’ teachers ahead of time say that the teachers are often excited about their student’s ability to learn about other cultures first hand. They usually SUPPORT the idea of family travel in October!

But if this hasn’t convinced you, take an hour or so to price things out. See what your cost to travel to Switzerland would be in summer or over spring break. Then compare that same trip to Switzerland cost in October.

And there’s one more (last) thing I want to say about traveling to Switzerland. Fall foliage in Switzerland is NEXT LEVEL. If you like to see the gorgeous color changing leaves, feel the cool fall breeze, and snuggle up in a pretty sweater… then this is PEAK fall vibes!

Okay. I’m done. I hope I’ve convinced you. Are you ready for the last budget tips for traveling to Switzerland?

We’re not exactly ending this post on a high note with the biggest, most mind-blowing of all Switzerland tips. But since we’re a family of 7, I like to have 7 tips in my posts. LOL!! (Sorry, I’m a dork, I know!)

But don’t discount this one. In terms of places to travel that are super cheap Switzerland is NOT on that list. This means that every dollar you save helps, right?

Switzerland is one of the places in the world where their drinking water is INCREDIBLE. Some of the coolest things to see in Switzerland involve lakes and glaciers, after all. 

And since lots of things in Switzerland can be a bit on the expensive side, why not save $20 or $30 on bottled water expenses and splurge on a downloadable walking tour instead?

I also talk about having a water bottle in my general Switzerland tips post because it’s easier to get dehydrated in higher altitudes. And I don’t know if I’ve actually mentioned it before, but I have an auto-immune condition called Sjogrens, which literally sucks the water out of my body and causes a ton of other health issues. My kids are at risk for it, too. So I’ve developed a bit of an obsession with proper hydration. 

So now you know that my bizarre need to constantly mention water bottles (and also hydration tablets, as I talk about in my 5 Must Haves For Travel With Kids post) actually comes from somewhere, even if it’s not super specific to budget Switzerland tips. LOL!!

In Conclusion: Keeping Your Trip To Switzerland Cost As Low As Possible

I’ve thrown lots of budget Switzerland tips at you in this post. Hopefully, they can help you save TONS of money when planning out your Switzerland trip!

But as a general rule, and to summarize this article, no single tip or hack is going to make your trip to Switzerland cost less. But taking several of these tips COMBINED can potentially save you hundreds (or even thousands) of dollars!
